I feel like boudoir has always had this reputation for being “the gift.” You know, the one you surprise your fiancé with before the wedding or give your husband for your anniversary. If you spend five minutes searching for bridal boudoir online, you’ll probably find dozens of articles talking about how much your future husband is going to love it. And while they’re not wrong and I write them too—I’ve never had someone tell me their partner didn’t absolutely love their album—I also think that mindset leaves a lot of women wondering if boudoir is only something you do once you’re in a relationship.
The funny thing is, that’s not what I’m seeing in my studio anymore.
Some of my favorite clients are women in their twenties who are completely single. They’re building careers, traveling with their friends, decorating their apartments exactly how they want them, and honestly just enjoying this season of life. They aren’t booking a boudoir session because someone asked them to or because they need a wedding gift. They book because it sounds like a fun experience, they’ve always wanted to do it, and they think it would be really cool to have photos of themselves that make them feel confident.
And absolutely… I love that.
I think there’s been a shift over the last few years. Women aren’t waiting for a relationship to give themselves permission to do things that make them happy anymore. We book the trip. We buy the concert tickets. We celebrate promotions at work. We go to brunch with our friends just because it’s Saturday. We’ve gotten really good at creating experiences for ourselves, and I think boudoir deserves to be looked at the same way.
When you think about it, this version of your life deserves to be documented too. Whether you’re single, dating, engaged, or married, you’re never going to be exactly who you are right now again. Maybe this is the year you moved to Huntsville. Maybe you’re finally settling into your dream career. Maybe you’re just feeling more like yourself than you have in a long time. Those are milestones too, even if they don’t come with a ring.
That’s one of the reasons I love being a boudoir photographer in Huntsville. Every woman who walks through my studio doors has a different story, and not all of them involve a relationship. Some are celebrating birthdays, some are marking a fresh start, and some simply woke up one morning and decided they were tired of talking themselves out of doing something they’d always wanted to try.
